Project scheme

The project scheme will include the following milestones:

1. Elaboration - using XRF, SR-XRF and micro-PIXE techniques - of a complex study concerning the composition of Romanian museums ancient gold objects and relating this information with provenance (Carpathian gold sources, workshops and technologies) and circulation aspects (commercial, military problems) with a special case - the Dacian gold bracelets(1.10.2007 - 30.11.2008)

1.1 Preliminary report on the first five gold Dacian bracelets provenance considerations using XRF, and micro-SR-XRF (1.10.2007 - 31.12.2007);

  • IFIN-HH group will perform the XRF measurements at IFIN-HH and micro-SR-XRF measurements at ANKA SR facility, Karlsruhe, Germany and BESSY (Berlin synchrotron), Berlin, Germany with - FP7 - TARI support, and will elaborate the preliminary report ;

1.2 Study on Neolithic, La Tene and Dacian gold objects, including Dacian gold objects, by using XRF, micro-SR-XRF and micro-PIXE (1.01.2008-30.11.2008).

  • IFIN-HH will perform XRF measurements in Bucharest and micro-PIXE measurements at FZR, Germany and at the AN2000 accelerator of INFN-LNL, Italy (FP7 - TARI support);
  • MNIR will provide gold objects and will perform the archaeological interpretation of the compositional results; MNIR will organize an international workshop on the Coinage in Central and South-Eastern Europe ;
  • IA-AR will provide several gold items (especially coins) and will perform the archaeological interpretation of the compositional results ;
  • FI-UB will perform the archaeological interpretation of the compositional results;
  • INCCR will perform preliminary in-museums analyses of several gold objects.

2. Elaboration - using XRF and PIXE techniques - of a study concerning the identification of modern and contemporary forgeries for ancient and medieval gold and silver coins in relation with technological (gold and silver sources, golding and silvering fakes, plated coins, etc) and historical - commercial aspects; a special case - the presumed Dacian - "koson" type gold coins (1.12.2008 - 30.06.2009)

  • IFIN-HH will perform the XRF and PIXE measurements at Bucharest Tandem accelerator;
  • MNIR will provide the coins and will perform the numismatic interpretation of the compositional results;
  • IA-AR will provide several coins and will perform the numismatic interpretation of the compositional results;
  • FI-UB will perform the numismatic interpretation of the compositional results;
  • INCCR will perform preliminary in-museums analyses of several gold and silver coins.

3. Elaboration - using XRF and PIXE techniques - of a study concerning the composition of prehistoric and Dacian silver jewelry in relation with technological (silver sources, silvering fakes, re-melting of Greek-Roman coins etc) and historical - commercial aspects (1.07.2009 - 30.11.2009)

  • IFIN-HH will perform the XRF and PIXE measurements at Bucharest Tandem accelerator;
  • MNIR will provide silver objects and will perform the archaeological interpretation of the compositional results; MNIR will organize an international workshop on precious and common metals archaeological objects;
  • IA-AR will provide silver objects and will perform the archaeological interpretation of the compositional results;
  • FI-UB will perform the archaeological interpretation of the compositional results;
  • INCCR will perform preliminary in-museums analyses of several silver objects.

4. Elaboration - using XRF and PIXE techniques - of a study concerning the composition of museums ancient (prehistoric to Roman period) bronze and lead objects in relation with their provenance (copper and tin sources, technologies, workshops) and circulation aspects (commercial, military problems) (1.12.2009 - 30.09.2010)

  • IFIN-HH will perform XRF and PIXE measurements at Bucharest Tandem accelerator;
  • MNIR will provide the archaeological samples and will perform the archaeological interpretation of the compositional results;
  • IA-AR will provide bronze objects and coins and will perform the archaeological interpretation of the compositional results; IA-AR will organize an international workshop on archaeometallurgy;
  • FI-UB will perform the archaeological interpretation of the compositional results;
  • INCCR will perform preliminary in-museums analyses of some bronze and lead objects.

5. Elaboration of an e-manual with an educational purpose; the e-manual will present the archaeometrical potential of the XRF, SR-XRF, PIXE and micro-PIXE techniques for authentication (forgeries and adulterations identification) and provenance of gold and silver museum objects and will be illustrated with selected information from the above mentioned studies; the e-manual will be realized on CD and as a specialized interactive website; a M.Sc. level course dedicated to archaeometallurgy at the Faculty of History, University of Bucharest will be organized (1.12.2009-30.09.2010)

  • IFIN-HH will coordinate the elaboration of the e-manual technical part;
  • MNIR will host the specialized interactive web site and will participate to the elaboration of the e-manual;
  • FI-UB, IA-AR and INCCR will coordinate the elaboration of the e-manual didactic and archaeological part;

IFIN-HH, MNIR, IA-AR, FI-UB and INCCR will organize together the M.Sc. level course dedicated to archaeometallurgy.
